Kol Rinah Update for November

Our Chanukah concert will soon be here!  We hope to see many of you on Sunday, December 13th at the JCC of Harrison.  We’ve got a few old favorites to share, lots of new music to sing, and we’re excited to be featuring a solo performance by Cantor Israel Singer of Harrison.  The concert’s set for 4:00 and we hope you’ll join us afterwards for some refreshments before you head off for dinner. Order tickets on our website to save $2 a ticket over the at-the-door price.

Looking forward a little, we’ve planned an Open House for January 6th.  We’ll be starting some new repertoire, so if you missed the fall semester, this is a great time to come to our Open House and sing with us!

Kol Rinah Updates for August

It’s been a long, hot summer, friends, but we have used the down time well.  Many of us attended the North American Jewish Choral Festival in July during which several hundred singers, conductors, cantors, and avid listeners descend on the aging but hospitable Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, NY for 5 days of song and camaraderie.  Not only do we get to learn some new music to sing, we’re treated to concerts from choruses from all over the U.S. and Canada (and even some young people from Israel!).  We take careful notes and bring our favorite pieces to our own Kol Rinah as new repertoire for the coming year.   I think you’ll really like what we’ve got planned for this coming year!

As a special treat, this  year the Festival honored  92-year-old Flory Jagoda, a delightful musician who combines the Sephardic melodies of her youth with her own talents to give to the world songs like Ocho Kandelikas (which she said just sprang out of her – like a baby!), La Rosa, Siete Ijos, Hamisha Asar, and so much more!  Many of us got to spend some one-on-one time with her — an experience we won’t soon forget!  Take a look at some of us with the brilliant Flory Jagoda:

Now we’re gearing up for two events.  First of all, we are having our annual Tag Sale on Sunday, August 30, from 9:00 a.m. till about 2:00 p.m. rain or shine at 1410 Chatham Lane, Yorktown Heights (in the Hanover development).  It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, so if you’re in the area, we’d love you to come by, take a look at what we have, and just schmooze with us.

Following closely on the Tag Sale will be our annual Open House.  Have you ever thought about joining Kol Rinah as a singer?  Come to our rehearsal on Wednesday, September 2, at 7:15 and sing along with us.  If you like it and we feel like a good fit for you, speak to Ben Gruder, our conductor, about a gentle, private audition.

We’re excited about all of our plans for the coming year.  Stay posted!

Kol Rinah Update for May

Our May concert, which was well received by our audience at the Yorktown Jewish Center, is now behind us.  This week, we are proud to perform a concert for the Havorah group of the Westchester Jewish Family Services.  Every spring for the past many years, we’ve sung in full concert dress for anywhere from 50 – 100 developmentally disabled adults and their caregivers.  They are our most enthusiastic audience and just love to be part of a live music performance.  Even our rendition of Happy Birthday (“Is it anyone birthday this week?  Is it anyone’s birthday this month?  Is it anyone’s birthday this year?”) brings applause and lively participation.  But as much as this audience gets from our concert, we get more.  These friends don’t merely clap politely — they cheer and shout and let us know we touched them.  And what could be a better feeling than to know you’ve made someone’s day more joyful?

After our Havorah concert, we’ll be entertaining the members of the Greater Orange County Federation in Newburgh, NY, followed by a summer hiatus during which many of our members attend the North American Jewish Choral Festival in Kerhonkson, NY.  About 500 singers of all level of experience and accomplishment join for 5 days of exploring, sharing, singing, and enjoying Jewish music.  We’ll learn and hear an array of Jewish music and bring back our favorites to sing for you this coming season.  We look forward to much more music to come!

Kol Rinah Update for April

It’s nearly here!  We’re excitedly preparing for our annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 3 at 4:00 at the Yorktown Jewish Center.  We’ll have lots of new music – and some old favorites – for all of our friends and fans.  Tickets are available online (click the button to the right) or at the door.

We had a wonderful response to our concert at Temple Beth Abraham in Tarrytown this February.  After our spring concert in Yorktown, we’ll be guest performers at a meeting of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County in Newburgh.  So far, our calendar is fairly open for the fall, so if your organization or synagogue would be interested in having Kol Rinah perform at the next meeting or gathering, please let us know!  We love to rehearse and spend time together, but we are happiest performing for an audience.

Kol Rinah Update for February

We had such a lovely concert at Temple Beth Abraham in Tarrytown this Chanukah that we can’t wait to go back later this month to participate in a Friday night Shabbat service.  Cantor Margot Goldberg will be performing a solo, and we’re sure the congregation will be joining us in a few numbers.  Please check the Temple Beth Abraham website for directions and further information.

Even though Tu B’shvat is now behind us, it’s not too late to enjoy our latest video.  Hamisha Asar is a lively Sephardic song that speaks to the fruits and other agricultural species that our Jewish Arbor day celebrates.  Click on this link for Kol Rinah’s rendition, accompanied by inspiring photos.

Our next concert will be on Sunday, May 3 at 4:00 at the Yorktown Jewish Center.  We had such a lively, enthusiastic, appreciative audience there last year that we’re returning for an encore engagement.  Check back in a few weeks for more details and to order tickets in advance.

Kol Rinah Updates for November

We’re proud to have five new singers join or rejoin Kol Rinah for the upcoming year.  We’re busy brushing up some previous repertoire and learning new pieces for the upcoming concerts.  We’re sure our audiences are going to like them.

We’ve been invited to sing at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, Connecticut on November 30.  This is our fourth or fifth gig at the Home for the Elderly.  We love them, and they love us!  If your group wants to start a love affair with Kol Rinah, we’re available!

Have you found just the right hostess gift for Thanksgiving?  Yankee candle has some great ideas, and if you click here, you’ll be helping Kol Rinah as well: www.yankeecandlefundraising.com and enter group number 990069731.  Or you can pick up an extra copy of our CD (just click on the right) and share our music with your friends and family.

We bought three new microphone stands so far with money we’ve made from our Yankee Candle fundraising and other donations.  I promise we’ll put your funds to good use!

Lastly, it’s not too early to buy tickets to our Chanukah concert (see buttons on the right).  We’ve never sung in Tarrytown before and we’re hoping for a large, enthusiastic crowd so get your tickets soon!

Kol Rinah Update for October

We’re so excited to have new singers join us this season.  So far, we welcome Colin Goldberg, Joanne Steiner, and Deborah Sachare — and more people are scheduled to audition.  The more outstanding singers join us, the richer and fuller our sound.

Although not all of our new singers will be ready to join us on our next concert or two, they will have the chance to sing with us first at our Chanukah concert at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, Connecticut, on November 30th. We’ve been invited to this beautiful venue many times in the past, and we’re always treated to a most appreciative audience.

Shortly after that concert, we’re proud to announce our annual Chanukah concert, which this year will be at Temple Beth Abraham in Tarrytown, New York on Sunday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m.  The newly refurbished sanctuary and sound system will be a wonderful backdrop to our spirited Chanukah repertoire, including several new pieces.

Tickets for our Chanukah concert are on sale now on our website via PayPal, or any one of our singers can reserve an advanced ticket for you.  It’s going to be a great evening!
