Update for September 2014

How exciting to see so many potential Kol Rinah singers at our Open House!  If you missed it but still want to sing with us, it’s not too late.  Come to our next rehearsal (note:  we’re closed on September 24, October 8, and October 15 to observe Jewish holidays)!  If you think we’d be a good fit for each other, come to a rehearsal and then schedule a private, gentle audition with our conductor, Ben Gruder.  He usually schedules auditions for just before our rehearsal (which are Wednesdays at 7:15 at the Rosenthal JCC, Pleasantville, NY).

I can hardly believe it, but we’re already filling up concert slots for this year.  We’re even working with a synagogue in Connecticut for a Chanukah 2015 concert!  Our next gig will be on November 30th at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, Connecticut.  We’ve sung at that beautiful facility several times before to a warm, enthusiastic audience and we can’t wait to do it again!

Watch this website for information about our upcoming Chanukah Concert, which will be on December 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Abraham, Tarrytown, NY.

We just concluded our annual repertoire meeting, and I’m so excited about the wonderful mix of music we’ll be singing this year.  Ladino, Hebrew, Yiddish, English, liturgical, pop, modern, Renaissance – we’ll have a little bit of everything for you this Chanukah and this spring.  Kol Rinah keeps getting better and better and we thank our loyal fans who have been with us for many years.  Here’s to a terrific 14th year!

Update for July 2014

I’m so excited about Kol Rinah’s performance at the North American Jewish Chorale Festival a few weeks ago!  We partnered with Nashir! The Rottenberg Chorale, also conducted by Ben Gruder, and according to all sources, we wowed one and all.  I’m frankly not surprised:  we practiced so ardently and we have such a cadre of talented singers, we were bound to do ourselves proud.  The NAJCF is an annual gathering of singers, cantors, composers, arrangers, conductors, and others who love Jewish choral music – or who just love to sing.  This year, there were over 600 in attendance over the 5-day retreat in the Catskills.

Our next gig is a set at the Westchester County Jewish Heritage Festival at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, New York.  We’re scheduled to take the stand at around 5:00, so we hope many of our old fans – and those who are interested in hearing us for the first time – bring a picnic and join us.  Last year it rained on our performance, so keep your fingers and toes crossed for good weather!

We’re also gearing up for our fall Open House.  If you think you might like to sing with us and you’d like to check us out, please come on September 3rd to the Rosenthal JCC on Bear Ridge Road in Pleasantville, NY at 7:15.  If you think we’d be a good match for each other, speak with Ben for an appointment for a (very gentle) private audition.  We’re growing – and we’d love you to be part of our group!

Kol Rinah Updates for June 2014

Thank you, thank you to our enthusiastic audience on June 8th at the Yorktown Jewish Center!  Our Spring Concert was our best-attended ticket performance to date and the audience appreciated the eclectic mix of songs.  One audience member told me, “What a good name for your chorus.  Kol Rinah – Joyous Voice – really describes how you all sing!”  And to top it all off, Steve Cohen, composer of our finale song, and Phyllis and Richard Rosen, who commissioned that song, were in our audience.

Usually our season ends after our spring concert.  But this year, we’re on high gear as we prepare for our joint performance with Nashir!  We’ll be singing at the North American Jewish Choral Festival, which runs from July 20 – 24 in Kerhonkson, NY.  Hundreds and hundreds of people who love Jewish choral music come from all over the country to learn new music, sing together, learn new technique, and renew old friendships at the annual five-day retreat.  We’ve never sung with Nashir! before, but we share a conductor, Ben Gruder, so we should be a good fit, and our sound should be rich and powerful.

We can’t even rest after the Choral festival!  On Sunday, August 17, we’re scheduled to sing at the Kensico Dam Jewish Heritage Festival in Valhalla. We’re going on at around 5:00 and we hope to see many of our loyal fans there.

Kol Rinah update for May 2014

So much for my intention to update monthly!  So many of us were involved in our own synagogue’s Purim shpiels, followed closely by all those Passover preparations, that I simply forgot!

This week, Kol Rinah is pleased to be performing at the Westchester Jewish Council’s Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Awards presentation at the Jewish Community Center of Harrison.  We’re prepped and ready and we can’t wait to help honor those noble volunteers with our music.

By now, you’ve probably received your spring concert letter and flyer in the mail.  If not, please send us a note to let us know!  We think we’ll be drawing an especially large audience since so many of us are congregants of the Yorktown Jewish Center where we’ll be performing that concert.  If you’ve always meant to see us live, this is the time!  We’ve got lots of new music, some nice refreshments (what’s a concert without a little nosh and schmoozing afterwards?), and lots of energy and ruach, so please do come on Sunday, June 8th, at 2:00.

Update for March 2014

Have you gotten your “Save The Date” postcard for our spring concert in the mail?  If not, just give us your mailing address and we’ll get one right out to you.

In two weeks, we’ll be putting on a “dress rehearsal” concert for the Havorah group of the Westchester Jewish Community Services.  Every year, we’re proud to put on a concert for this group of adults with developmental disabilities, many of whom live in group homes. They are an enthusiastic audience, and we love to entertain them.  There’s nothing like live Jewish music to bring us all together!

Now that Purim has passed, we’re all getting ready for Passover.  Have a sweet and kosher Pesach – and sing a song or two and think of Kol RInah!

February updates for Kol Rinah

We missed a rehearsal because of the snow, but we’re still busily learning new music for our June 8th concert at the Yorktown Jewish Center.  I love the way our new “save the date” postcards came out.  They should be arriving at my house by the end of February, so if you’re on our mailing list, you should get yours a few days after that.  If you’re not on our mailing list, please do fill out your information on our “contact” page on this website.  We only send mail via the post office and/or email two or three times a year, and we NEVER sell, lend, or make available our mailing list.

New concert announcement:  Kol Rinah is now officially booked to sing at the Kensico Dam Jewish Heritage Festival on Sunday, August 17.  Yes, it’s six months away, but we couldn’t keep it a secret!  Let’s hope for glorious weather so we can all enjoy the day.
